Dermatology nurse Nicola Broad from Wigan was one of just 65 nurses in the country to be presented with the prestigious Queen’s Nurse title this year.
Nicola is a Community Dermatology Specialist Nurse with Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Trust, based at Wigan Health Centre.
She was presented with her Queen’s Nurse badge and certificate by Jane Cummings, Chief Nursing Officer for England during an awards ceremony in London.
The title of Queen’s Nurse is awarded by the Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI) to nurses who demonstrate a commitment to the values of community nursing and to excellent patient care through leading projects to improve care for patients.
Nicola has been instrumental in developing community eczema and psoriasis clinics for both children and adults in the Wigan borough.
In January her Eczema Expert package for children was one of just nine nurse-led projects to gain financial support from the QNI’s Fund for Innovation and Leadership Fund.
Nicola qualified as a registered general nurse in Wigan and worked as a registered sick children’s Nurse at Manchester Children’s Hospital and as a health visitor locally before developing a special interest in eczema as a result of her own experience caring for her son who has the condition.
She regularly shares her expertise and knowledge through a variety of groups, including the North West Royal College of GPs Dermatology study days and is a member of the British Dermatological Nursing Group and the Society of Academic Primary Skin Care Specialist Group.
She said: “I am absolutely thrilled and very proud to receive the Queen’s Nurse title. I am very fortunate that I absolutely love my work and feel privileged to be involved in my patients’ care and lives.
“I am passionate about providing high quality evidence based care and support in the community, as that is what each and every one of us deserves, and I will continue to strive hard to ensure that patients with eczema and psoriasis receive excellent care at the point of diagnosis.”
Dr Kate Fallon, Chief Executive of Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Trust said: “This award is well-deserved given the incredible work Nicola has put in to developing the community dermatology service we offer to children and their families. It also recognises her approach to developing innovative solutions like the “Eczema Expert” package which we are piloting in the Wigan borough.”
