Description of service

The Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Service is a clinic based service available in numerous sites across Bridgewater. The team consists of experienced Chartered Physiotherapists and support staff with the knowledge and skills to provide highly specialist advice, support and / or rehabilitation for people with Musculoskeletal conditions.


Who can access the service?

The MSK Physiotherapy Service is an adult based service and accepts referrals from 16 years of age and above with Musculoskeletal conditions.  Examples of conditions include:

  • Back and neck pain
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Sports injuries
  • Joint pains (hip, knee, ankle, shoulder, elbow and hand problems)
  • Nerve entrapment, such as Sciatica and carpal tunnel etc
  • Foot problems, such as Achilles tendonitis, planter fasciitis

What does MSK Physiotherapy provide?

The MSK Physiotherapy service offers a wide range of varying treatments and modalities, which are dependent on the outcome of a thorough  assessment

  • Manual therapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Injection therapy
  • Back rehabilitation
  • Shoulder rehabilitation
  • Pilates
  • Yoga
  • Electrotherapy
  • Ultra violet
  • Primus RS – isokinetics (strengthening)

Please note some modalities are available at designated sites only.


How can people access the service?

Current access is through a referral from a GP / Health Professional.  The service also receives referrals from the MSK Clinical Assessment and Treatment service (MSK CATS) and Secondary care Consultants – Orthopaedics, Dermatology, Pain Management etc.


Where is the service offered?

The service consists of three main teams which cover several satellite clinics:

Wigan – Boston House, Bradshaw Street, Chandler House, Longshoot surgery, Pemberton Shevington, Standish.

Leigh – Leigh Health Centre, Astley, Atherton, Golborne.

Recognising the benefits of moving to an electronic patient record, the Trust undertook a full review of the options for adoption of a full electronic patient record.

Bridgewater MSK CATS and MSK Physiotherapy services have adopted the AQP definition of Urgent to assist in referral management.

Please ensure your referral contains one or more of the following points to enable us to offer your patient an urgent appointment:

  • Patient dependent on strong analgesics e.g Tramadol
  • Severe sleep disturbance due to condition
  • Clinical condition likely to significantly and quickly deteriorate without intervention.
  • Severe impairment of activities of daily living.
  • Deteriorating neurological symptoms

Please ensure a correct daytime contact telephone number is included on the referral to assist this process and avoid delay.
